Sunday Night 8-10p (excluding Holidays)
Hi Saint Luke Athletic Community,
Happy summer break! I’ve asked for Parent Club help in publishing a list of ‘24-25 season updates, dates to remember, important links, and a recap of our Spring coordinator meeting.
We are called to Play Like a Champion:
The Athletic Program Coordinators and I recently met to discuss how we can best support our parish community, players, parents, and coaches.
A big focus of our meeting was driving maximum participation across our youth programs. While our program numbers continue to grow, I know there are opportunities to reach even more athletes. This means participation from all levels - including select athletes. CYO is truly about “having fun competing alongside your friends” and it’s a great chance to play for all levels of skill development.
If you’re playing select, I encourage you to continue this pursuit. Playing on a select team offers your player unparalleled training & athletic achievement.
However, please consider playing both. Playing CYO from k-8 with your school mates creates memories and lifetime friendships. In fact, all of our Saint Luke Program Coordinators spoke fondly of their time playing CYO and the memories it created.
My ask this athletic season is that you consider registering for our CYO programs. If you’re apprehensive about playing sport, know that we have a spot for you on the team! If you’re a select soccer player with a rigorous fall schedule - please sign up for Saint Luke Athletics too! Maybe you miss some practices / games, but the times you do get compassionately competing with your Saint Luke friends will be some of the most fulfilling times on the pitch.
Philosophy of CYO Athletics:
Another key takeaway from this meeting was publishing a clear philosophical statement that everyone - parents, coaches, and student athletes - can rally behind.
While our full CYO mission statement and philosophy can be found here, I’d like to highlight a specific quote from Saint John Paul II:
“Our athletics should go hand in hand with our youth ministry. Sports well understood and practiced contributes to the development of the whole person because it demands generous effort, careful self-control, mastery of self and respect for others, complete commitment and team spirit.”
This is a reminder for our parents and coaches… CYO athletics is a vehicle for reaching young people, for providing opportunities to grow in their faith, and to apply the lessons of faith to their daily lives. To our athletes, success should not be measured by the scoreboard, but by giving full effort, being the best teammate they can be, and having fun.
Please remember to pray before games, demonstrate on field sportsmanship, and play with compassionate competition under the goals of CYO.
Important Dates for the ‘24-25 Season:
Note: All offerings/dates can be found on Team Sideline. Please hover over “CYO Athletics Manual” and select your program. Also find attached the 2024-25 CYO Calendar.
2024-’25 Program Updates
Shoutouts for Outgoing Coordinators and Coaches
After years of service we have 3 coordinators transitioning out: John Skonier, XC coordinator, Lori Finch, track & field coordinator, and Josh McCorkle, Volleyball.
While they will be missed, these super-volunteers left the programs better than they found them and created excellent succession plans for our new coordinators.
This also means we have a few people stepping up to coordinate our programs: Eduardo Schoenzález, XC Coordinator, and Gretchen McNew, Volleyball. We are still seeking someone to own our Track & Field role - if interested, please reach out to me directly.
Last but not least, I want to recognize our head coaches from this past season - apologies if I missed your shout-out! Also a huge thank you goes to all the parents who serve as chauffeurs, assistant coaches, equipment managers, snack coordinators, and even referees. Without y’all our all-star Athletic Ministry would not be possible.

Sunday Night Ballers - Adult Basketball Open Gym
Sunday night basketball pick-up games are back! If you’re interested in running with your squad while building community, please join us Sunday’s from 8-10p starting December 11th. We will not be meeting up on December 25th or 31st due to the holidays, but will resume again on January 8th. See you on the court!
The St Luke 4-8th X-Country team participated in its final meet of the season, the CYO Championship Meet, on Sunday October 9th at Woodland Park, Seattle. By all measures it was a good meet for the team! The St Luke team fielded over 30 runners in an overall field of 1000 from over 45 schools! Among the highlights for St Luke was a 3rd place finish (among 100+ runners) in 5th grade girls, and two top ten finishes and 5 top 20 finishes in 7th grade boys.
These finishes in combination with strong runs from the other members of our team brought St Luke two prized awards: A first place trophy for the 7th grade boys team, and a fourth place trophy for overall team (K-8th) points. Both of these awards were hard won in a large, talented and competitive field.
4-8 Cross Country
St Luke XC had another fun and exciting meet at Woodland Park, Seattle on Sunday 9/25. Nearly 70 St Luke runners participated in an overall field of 1000+ participants among 30 CYO schools. All our runners did great on a demanding course that ranged up to 1.6 miles. The K-3 runners displayed their incredible energy and enthusiasm with another series of fast-paced runs. The 4-8th runners showed both speed and determination with St Luke achieving six top ten runs (including another #1 among 5th graders), and with team members new to the sport conquering these challenging long-distance runs.
Next meets:
10/2 at Woodland Park Seattle. K-3 Ribbon Run. Races begin at 1pm
10/9 at Woodland Park Seattle. 4-8th Championship Meet. Races begin at 1pm
K-8 Soccer
With record enrollments of over 250 student athletes in our youth programs this fall for XC & Soccer, we need your help. If you have extra time for this important Parish Ministry, please step-up to coach!
Further, a key tenant of our ‘22-23 plan is to increase Adult program awareness and participation.
Learn more about our fall coaching needs and athletic programs available for adults.
Team Sideline
Starting this year every student and in-parish athlete will receive a Warrior Spirit Jersey for free.
In order to for this to work, by August 15th we need parents to give sizes of their child on the above form.
This is a joint program between the parish athletic ministry and school. It will serve two of our primary goals: increase participation and drive funding. Due to the generosity of the administration, St. Luke School has graciously offered to fund the program at no cost to parents for the 2022-’23 season!
Included is a “dry-fit” style shirt with last name and number, grades K-8.
For grades K-5, these universal jerseys will be used for all sports.
For grades 6-8, we will continue to utilize our “wash and return” jersey program for games; however, these spirit wear jerseys may serve as alternate uniforms for practices and games, and can also be worn for community spirit and athletic / church rallies.
The benefits of the Warrior Spirit Program for student athletes, families, and St. Luke Parish and School are numerous. It helps keep CYO registration fees flat or reduced, encourages high participation rates, drives St. Luke spirit and community recognition of our players, and will help separately fund our St. Luke Parish goal to maintain, expand, and enhance our athletic programs and facilities.
So if you’re a school parent or in-parish parent with children enrolled in fall / winter / spring sports, please complete the quick form ASAP so your child can receive a jersey. Parents with multiple student athletes should refresh the page and complete the form as such.
God Bless,
Patrick McNulty
