In this book, Fr. Horan, a white man, shows his fellow white Catholics how to become better allies to their Black brothers and sisters and suggests ways that everyone can work to counteract racism in our culture and in the Church. He offers us the hope and surety of the Gospel, the wisdom of Catholic tradition, and some practical ways to educate ourselves and advocate for justice.
This study will help us make sense of crucial issues such as
• The difference between what sociologists call common-sense racism and systemic racism,
• What is meant by white privilege, and how it contributes to racial injustices,
• The Catholic Church’s teachings about racism, and what those teachings require of us, and
• How to combat racism in our everyday lives.
In addition to the book, we will also use a free study journal provided by Ave Maria Press. Participants will read a chapter of Fr. Horan’s book each week on their own and reflect on the questions in the study journal in preparation for the Tuesday night discussions on Zoom.
When: Tuesdays May 3- June 14 from 7-8pm on Zoom

In July, 2020, St. Luke Adult Faith Formation, a sub-committee of St. Luke’s Vision2022 Plan’s Education and Faith Formation Co-Mission, offered a four-week study via Zoom on the pastoral letter to end racism: Open Wide Our Hearts: the enduring call to love. Over forty St. Luke parishioners participated in the discussions that were lively, inspiring, and encouraging.
The pastoral letter by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) on racism, written in 2018, can be viewed HERE.
